Why This Campaign Was Initiated
Africa faces a convergence of crises—economic instability, prolonged droughts, civil conflict, disease outbreaks, and inadequate infrastructure—threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions. The Africa Rising campaign was initiated as a call to action, to unify efforts and elevate the continent’s collective response capacity.
Examples of Urgent Challenges Across Africa:
- Food Insecurity: Africa is facing an escalating hunger crisis driven by climate extremes, conflict, and economic instability:
Horn of Africa Drought: A historic multi-season drought has devastated Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, placing over 30 million people at immediate risk of starvation. Families are losing their livestock and livelihoods, while malnutrition rates among children are reaching emergency levels. Sahel Region Hunger Crisis: In West Africa’s Sahel, erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and violent conflict have severely disrupted agricultural production. As a result, millions face acute food insecurity and malnutrition, especially in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
- Displacement and Refugees: Ongoing armed conflicts and instability continue to force millions from their homes. Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo are grappling with large-scale violence, displacing over 10 million people, many of whom are living in temporary shelters with limited access to protection and essential services. In Uganda and Chad, refugee camps are stretched beyond capacity. Overcrowding, insufficient funding, and inadequate sanitation are creating dangerous public health conditions and undermining dignity and safety.
- Health Crises: Healthcare systems in many African countries are fragile and frequently overwhelmed by preventable and recurring crises. Ebola outbreaks continue to recur in West and Central Africa, requiring constant vigilance, rapid containment, and global health coordination. Maternal and infant mortality rates remain among the highest in the world, especially in rural and conflict-affected regions, due to lack of access to skilled healthcare workers, emergency obstetric services, and basic medicines.
- Youth Unemployment: Africa’s growing youth population faces limited prospects for employment and advancement. Over 60% of Africa’s unemployed population are young people, many of whom are educated but unable to find work due to economic stagnation and a mismatch between skills and market needs. The lack of access to quality education, vocational training, and entrepreneurship support is fueling poverty, social unrest, and irregular migration across borders and continents.
- Gender Inequality: Women and girls continue to bear the brunt of inequality, violence, and exclusion. In regions such as the Sahel and Central Africa, gender-based violence, child marriage, and harmful traditional practices remain widespread, often worsened by conflict and displacement. Access to education, reproductive healthcare, and leadership opportunities is still severely restricted for millions of women and girls, undermining their rights and potential.
- Climate Disasters: Climate change is intensifying natural disasters across the continent, displacing populations and crippling infrastructure. Cyclones in Mozambique, flooding in Nigeria, and desertification in the Sahel are destroying homes, displacing families, and wiping out years of development gains. Many African countries lack the early warning systems, emergency preparedness plans, and infrastructure resilience needed to respond effectively to these increasingly frequent and severe events.
Campaign Goals
- Raise $5 Billion USD in Humanitarian Aid
We aim to mobilize $5 billion USD through a combination of public and private donations, international development grants, and strategic partnerships with philanthropic organizations, corporations, and governments. These funds will be directed toward life-saving emergency responses, disaster recovery, and long-term resilience initiatives across Africa. Our fundraising strategy includes global awareness campaigns, donor engagement events, and transparent reporting to build trust and accountability.
- Establish 10 Regional Humanitarian Relief Hubs
To enhance rapid response capabilities, we will create 10 strategically positioned humanitarian relief hubs across key regions in Africa. Each hub will serve as a logistical center for storing and distributing critical supplies such as food, clean water, medicines, hygiene kits, and shelter materials. These hubs will also be equipped with communication technology and coordination teams to facilitate efficient disaster response operations.
- Empower 500 Local NGOs and Community-Based Organizations
We will identify, support, and strengthen 500 grassroots organizations already making a difference within their communities. This support will include direct funding, organizational development training, and access to digital tools and networks that improve service delivery. By building local capacity, we ensure sustainable and culturally relevant solutions that address urgent humanitarian needs and build long-term community resilience.
- Advocate for Policy Reform and Resilience Building
In collaboration with the African Union, national governments, and civil society, we will push for policy reforms that prioritize disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and social protection systems. Our advocacy efforts will focus on enhancing legal frameworks, increasing budget allocations for emergency response, and promoting inclusive governance structures that empower marginalized populations in times of crisis.
- Engage and Train 1 Million African Youth
Youth are the heartbeat of the continent’s future. We will engage one million young people through leadership development programs, certified emergency response training, and social entrepreneurship initiatives. This effort will nurture a new generation of changemakers equipped to drive local action, innovate solutions, and lead humanitarian efforts in their communities.
